Villa La Rondinaia is a stunning property built into a cliff-face of Ravello, a feature which gives the property its name – “The Swallow’s Nest” – and allows for panoramic views of the Amalfi Coast.
Built in the early 20th century, the villa is the former home of prolific writer Gore Vidal and has hosted its fair share of high society guests over the years, from film stars, musicians, artists, and authors, to socialites and dignitaries. Vidal’s former study remains in the property and is now used a museum.
The villa is hidden from view at its entrance by lush vegetation and is surrounded by 25,000 square metres of landscaped gardens, offering guests complete privacy. The gardens feature typical Mediterranean vegetation and guests can wander the paths lined with cypresses, lemon trees, pines, and olive groves, or relax in the various outdoor living spaces. The expansive grounds are also perfect for hosting a variety of events from weddings and birthday celebrations to galas, exhibitions and corporate retreats.
A cobalt blue swimming pool offers the perfect place to cool off. The pool area also boasts a Jacuzzi and a pool house for guests’ convenience, along with plenty of seating to enjoy a poolside cocktail whilst taking in the surroundings.
The historic villa has been expertly restored, retaining its traditional architectural elements including vaulted ceilings, arched windows, and tiled corridors. The décor and furnishings are by local artisans and have been beautifully paired with antiques including gold-plated door handles, goldsmith cabinet doors, and Murano glass lamps, as well as a mix of traditional and contemporary art throughout.
Several living rooms are located throughout the property, including a sea-view room with beautiful frescoed ceilings and a cosy fireplace, and a separate lounge with a bar made from beautifully-inlaid wood. The fully-equipped kitchen can be used by both staff and guests alike to prepare delicious Italian feasts.
Up to 12 guests can be accommodated in the six comfortable bedroom suites. Each bedroom features beautiful works of art, Murano glass chandeliers and Venetian wall lamps, along with a large TV, a minibar, and an en-suite bathroom with either a bathtub or shower. All bedrooms also have access to a sea-view terrace or balcony, plus one suite has a private, enclosed veranda with a Jacuzzi.
For guests looking for a property filled with history and offering luxury, comfort, and unbeatable views, Villa La Rondinaia cannot be missed.
